Nutrition is the KEY to BODY BEAST!

BODY BEAST NutritionI just finished my first week of BODY BEAST and all I can say is WOW.  So far this program has been everything that I expected and more.  I am very sore and completely worn out after a week of heavy lifting, but I really think that my body is already starting to change.  I am feeling stronger, bigger and more energetic.  Although, there are no visible changes yet on the outside, the soreness tells me that my muscles are working and that change is happening.

How to Eat
A huge part of my focus this week has been on nutrition.  I need to ensure that I eat enough calories to get me through my workout, and to replenish my muscles.  My target in this phase of the program is to eat 3200 calories per day.  The BODY BEAST guide book includes calculations to determine your specific calorie needs based on your weight and body fat percentage.  The book also recommends maintaining a ratio of 50% carbs, 25% protein, and 25% fat over the course of the day.  I have been trying to space out the food so that I am eating every 2-3 hours.  It is better to eat smaller meals more often instead of a few huge meals because your body can better digest the smaller meals and get the maximum nutrients out of the food.

My typical eating schedule has been like this:

  • 5:00 am workout (on an empty stomach)
  • 6:30 am post workout nutrition (shake and supplements)
  • 9:30 am morning snack
  • 12:30 pm lunch
  • 3:30 pm afternoon snack
  • 6:00 pm dinner
  • 8:30 pm evening snack

I have noticed that since I started the BODY BEAST workouts this week, I have been MUCH more hungry.  It has been no problem for me to eat something every couple of hours.  Even when I am thinking to myself, "I am really full, there is no way I am going to be hungry soon".  Then sure enough, 30 minutes later my stomach is rumbling again.

My Fitness Pal GraphI decided to track my nutrition using a food diary application called myfitnesspal.  This app works on the computer or on your smart phone and lets you enter everything that you eat throughout the day.  It tracks calories, carbs, fat, protein, vitamins, cholesterol, and pretty much any other nutritional information that you want.  You can setup your goals and percentages and it will tell you exactly where you stand at any point during the day.  This makes it really simple to maintain the required nutrition for this program.

What to Eat
The BODY BEAST Nutrition guide is very easy to follow and very helpful in determining what to eat.  Foods are broken down into categories such as Starches, Legumes, Veggies, Fruits, Protein, etc.  Then the guide tells you exactly what portions to take from each of the categories.  This makes it SO simple.  For example, I need 8 Starches, 4 Legumes, 7 Vegetables, 9 Fruits, 16 Proteins, and 7 Fats per day.  Following these recommended portions will put me right around my target calories and macro-nutrient ratio.  The BODY BEAST Nutrition guide also has some amazing recipes that incorporate foods on the list and tell you exactly which portions are satisfied by that recipe.  The recipes that I have tried so far are easy to prepare and taste delicious.

One of the things I like most about the BODY BEAST nutrition plan is how the Supplements are incorporated right into the plan.  I have tried to include supplements into my other workout programs in the past, but I was never quite sure the best supplements to use and how to use them.  With BODY BEAST, everything is right there.  I learned that after your workout you have a small window of opportunity when your muscles are primed to absorb nutrients for recovery.  If you feed your muscles the right blend of carbs and protein right after your workout, you can speed recovery and encourage maximum muscle growth.  I have been drinking a shake right after my workout made from fruit juice (apple or grape), frozen berries, Hardcore Base Shake, Fuel Shot, and M.A.X. Creatine.  This combination really helps me feel better and recover quickly when I am shaky and wobbly after my workout.
